4-Run 5th, Bullpen Effort Carry Longwood Past NSU 7-4

NORFOLK, Va. – Longwood used a four-run fifth inning to take the lead for good, then held off Norfolk State in the late innings to top the Spartans 7-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

Cullan Wadsworth hit a two-run homer in the fifth for the Lancers (6-6) and Eliot Dix singled in two more runs. Longwood's bullpen made the lead stand up late as a late rally by the Spartans (2-9) came up short.

The Spartans struck quickly for a pair of runs in the first. Dionte Brown led off the frame with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Alsander Womack walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Korey Singh's groundout.

The Lancers managed just one run in the first four innings against NSU starter Ridge Walker, that coming on an RBI triple by Hunter Gilliam in the third. But the Lancers got to Walker in the fifth. After a Hayden Harris walk, Wadsworth hit a two-run homer to give Longwood the advantage. After a Spartan error, Dix added a two-out, two-run single to extend the lead to 5-2.

Womack singled in Brown in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Lancers' lead to 5-3. NSU got even closer in the eighth. Mason Velasquez led off the frame with a bunt single. One out later, Ty Hanchey walked and Minjae Hong hit a long single off the right field wall to load the bases. Reliever Michael Tolson hit Danny Hosley with a pitch to force in a run, but Tolson fanned the next two hitters to end the threat.

Longwood tacked on two insurance runs in the ninth. Corbin McCloud hit a two-out RBI double, and pinch runner Michael Dolberry stole third and scored on a throwing error to give the Lancers a cushion.

Matt Shobe (1-0) earned the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief pitching. Dillon Champagne picked up his first save with a scoreless ninth.

Walker (0-2) allowed three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings pitched. He fanned a season-high four batters.

Hosley and Velasquez both had two hits for NSU. Brown scored a pair of runs.

The Spartans are off for the next 10 days before hosting a four-game series with Morehead State on March 19-21.
