NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State women's basketball star
Chanette Hicks was named Monday to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, the conference announced.
In conjunction with its 50
th anniversary, the MEAC has held an online vote to determine the top 50 athletes all-time in each sport sponsored by the conference. Nearly 3,500 votes were cast for the women's basketball all-time team, with fans, media representatives, institution sports information contacts and others taking part.
To be considered on the ballot, players must have been named to one of the following: first team All-MEAC, MEAC Player of the Year, All-America or a MEAC Hall of Fame inductee.
Though she played just one season with NSU (2019-20), Hicks checks a number of those boxes. She became the first player in conference history to win Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. She is the first player in school history to win either award. In addition, Hicks was selected HBCU National Player of the Year by BoxToRow, first team All-MEAC and was also voted to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State first team.
Hicks led the MEAC in scoring (20.0 points per game), assists (5.0) and steals (4.8) per game last year. She ranked second nationally in steals and 12th in scoring. Her steals per game average set a new school record.
Hicks led the Spartans to a 19-11 overall record and 12-4 mark in the MEAC, NSU's best-ever record in the conference. NSU advanced to the semifinals of the MEAC tournament before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the final two rounds of the championship.
