5 Spartans Named to MEAC 50th Anniversary Men’s Basketball Team

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State men's basketball was represented by five players on the MEAC All-Time Men's Basketball Team in celebration of the league's 50th anniversary this year.

MEAC Players of the Year Damian Woolfolk, Chakowby Hicks and Kyle O'Quinn were joined by two-time first-team All-MEAC honorees Michael Deloach and Jeff Short in forming NSU's five-player contingent on the anniversary team.

The MEAC is using online fan voting to select its all-time teams in every sport in conjunction with the ongoing celebration of its 50th year of operation. Nearly 3,000 votes were cast for the men's basketball all-time team, with fans, media representatives, institution sports information contacts and others taking part. To be considered on the ballot, players must have been named one of the following: first-team All-MEAC, MEAC Player of the Year, All-America or be a MEAC Hall of Fame inductee.

O'Quinn was a two-time MEAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 and '12. He was also named the MEAC Player of the Year in 2012 as a senior when he led the Spartans to their only MEAC Championship. He later guided the Spartans to an upset of No. 2 seed Missouri in the NCAA Tournament before becoming the first MEAC player in 14 years to hear his named called in the NBA Draft. He was inducted into the MEAC Hall of Fame in 2019.

Woolfolk was a two-time MEAC Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000. He earned first-team All-MEAC honors both years after scoring more than 20 points per game. In just three years with the Spartans, he totaled more than 1,700 points. His scoring average of 23.5 points during his junior season in 1998-99 still stands as NSU's Division I record.

Hicks was named the MEAC Player of the Year in 2005 and was a two-time first-team All-MEAC honoree in 2004 and '05 during his junior and senior seasons. He was also named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team in 2002 and went on to score more than 1,300 career points. He still ranks second all-time at NSU with 276 steals.

Deloach ranks as one of the most prolific scorers in NSU history, ranking ninth all-time with nearly 1,800 career points. He was a two-time first-team All-MEAC honoree in 2009 and '10 during his junior and senior seasons. He averaged better than 21 points per game both of those seasons and holds the school's Division I record for total points in a season with 666 in 2008-09.

Like the other four, Short was also a two-time first-team All-MEAC honoree, in 2015 and '16 during his junior and senior years. He scored more than 1,100 points in just two seasons with the Spartans, including 19 points per game as a junior. He was named the Preseason MEAC Player of the Year the following season.

Only three other MEAC schools in North Carolina A&T (7), Howard (7) and South Carolina State (6) had more honorees than NSU. All three schools have been members of the league since its inception. Norfolk State is now in its 24th year in the MEAC.
