CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In the finale tuneup for the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Norfolk State men's team got a first-place finish from its 4x100 meter relay team on Saturday at the University of Virginia Grand Prix.
"We needed this meet since we haven't raced in almost a month," said NSU Director of Track & Field
Kenneth Giles, whose team last competed on April 9. "We had several season-best performances, so overall, I was pleased."
The quartet of
Kai Cole,
Anthony Franklin,
Savien Hayes and
Keith Brown won the 4x100 relay in a season-best time of 40.23 seconds. That time ranks as third-fastest in the MEAC so far this year.
Cole and Franklin both also finished in the top five in the 100 meters. Cole was fourth in 10.56 seconds and Franklin was close behind in fifth, in 10.57. Hayes also recorded an individual top-five finish, placing second in the 200 in 21.31 seconds.
Trequan Barnes capped a strong meet for the sprinters with a season-best time in the 400. He crossed the line third in 46.54 seconds.
In the field, freshmen accounted for three more season-best marks. Triple jumper
Isaac Haywood notched the MEAC's top mark of outdoor season with a leap of 48 feet, 6 inches. He placed fifth at the meet. In the long jump,
Camren Wynder-Hill took seventh with a top leap of 23-2.5. Rodric Cox-Cooper was eighth in 23-0.5.
Azad Williams led the throwers with a seventh-place showing in the shot put. His top throw was 51-4.5.
The Spartans will next compete at the MEAC Outdoor Championships Thursday through Saturday on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
