Alcaraz Named to VaSID All-State Team

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State senior men's tennis player Andres Alcaraz added an all-state award to his ledger when the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released the 2021 University Division All-State Tennis Team on Wednesday.

He was voted to the VaSID All-State Second Team for 2021. This year's MEAC Player of the Year award, Alcaraz becomes the third NSU men's tennis player to earn all-state honors, joining Dzmitry Zyhmantovich in 2014 and Miroslav Vlcek in 2008. All three earned the conference's player of the year award those respective years.

Alcaraz finished his fifth and final collegiate season this year by earning first-team All-MEAC honors for the second time in his career in addition to the player of the year award. He went 9-3 overall in singles, 3-0 in the league, competing at either the No. 1 or 2 positions in the lineup.

He joined Zyhmantovich and Vlcek in becoming just the third NSU player to win the MEAC Player of the Year award. Alcaraz led the Spartans to the MEAC Tournament final in 2021 for just the second time ever, where he was named to the MEAC All-Tournament Team for doubles. The Spartans also won the MEAC Northern Division title at 3-0, the second regular season title ever, as part of an 8-5 overall campaign.

The University of Virginia swept all three major awards with Carl Söderlund (player of the year) and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg (rookie of the year) earning the two player awards. Virginia head coach Andres Pedroso was named the VaSID State Coach of the Year.
