ATLANTA, Ga. – Having earned home and road victories this season, Norfolk State men's basketball checked off a neutral-site win as well on Saturday night. The Spartans (4-2) defeated Alabama A&M (0-4) 89-83 in Atlanta, Ga., their second consecutive victory after a pair of losses to top-10 nationally ranked teams.
Making his second start of the season,
Cahiem Brown led the Spartans with a career-high 20 points, making three 3-pointers and shooting 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Four Spartans scored in double-figures on Saturday, including
Christian Ings (15 points),
Dana Tate Jr. (14), and
Joe Bryant Jr. (10).
Kris Bankston paced the Spartans on the glass, pulling down eight rebounds to go with his eight points. In addition to his efficient shooting night (5-of-7), Ings facilitated the offense productively, dishing out seven assists.
Norfolk State shot 13-of-20 in the second half from the field (65.0 percent) and 17-of-23 from the free throw line (73.9 percent), helping close the game out in the final stretch. The Spartans shot made 24-of-34 free throws on the night (70.6 percent), their second game this season eclipsing 70 percent at the charity stripe.
The shooting clinic didn't stop there, though. It extended beyond the arc as well, where the Spartans made 11-of-19 attempts (57.9 percent) on Saturday. It was the most 3-pointers the team had sunk since its season-opening win against Virginia University Lynchburg, and its most efficient shooting night from deep since the Spartans hit 20-of-34 (62.5 percent) against Apprentice on Nov. 14, 2019.
Norfolk State returns to Echols Hall on Tuesday for its first home matchup in nearly two weeks, hosting St. Mary's College of Maryland at 7 p.m.
