Spartans Drop Doubleheader at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Norfolk State baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Davidson on Friday night at Wilson Field. In the Spartans' first road trip of the year, NSU fell 16-0 and 12-3 to the Wildcats.

In game one, Nolan Devos allowed just one hit and struck out 11 batters over seven innings and three Wildcats hit home runs. Michael Carico went 4-for-4 and hit one of the homers, Trevor Candelaria hit a three-run shot and Parker Nolan added a solo homer. Davidson scored 10 runs in the first four innings and did not look back.

NSU managed just one hit in the game, a single to left field by Steven Shaffer in the second inning.

In game two, the Spartans started off with an early lead. Dionte Brown and Jacob Council hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the first, and after a Davidson error, Shaffer scored Brown with a groundout.

Davidson responded with three runs off just one hit in the bottom of the first, but the Spartans tied it right back up at 3-all in the second. Tommy Woods was hit by a pitch and Robert Beatty walked, and both scored on a two-out triple by Raphy Rodriguez that knotted the score.

But Wilson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to give the Wildcats the lead for good, the start of nine unanswered runs to close out the game for the hosts.

Six different Spartans had a hit in game two. Zac Capps struck out a season-high seven batters in five innings of relief, his longest outing of the season so far.

The teams play the final game of the series at 2 p.m. Saturday.
