NORFOLK, Va. – Joshua Peterson established a new personal record en route to a victory in the long jump and Evans Cheruiyot won his second event in as many days on Friday to highlight day 2 of the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the Spartan men at Dick Price Stadium.

Thanks in part to the two gold medal finishes, the Spartans are in first place after two days with 82.5 points. Howard is second with 50.

Peterson soared to a mark of 25 feet, 1.25 inches for a new career best. That is more than half a foot longer than his previous season best and should put him in position to qualify for regionals.

Peterson was one of three Spartans who scored in the long jump Friday. Isaac Haywood tied for fifth with a jump of 24-0.75, while Rodric Cox-Cooper finished eighth in 23-7.25.

Cheruiyot added to his medal haul by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a PR of 9:28.33. Cheruiyot, who won the 10,000 on Thursday, led three Spartans who finished in the top five in the steeplechase. Regan Kimtai was second in 9:30.05 and Meshack Kipchirchir finished fifth in 9:52.30.

The Spartans also fared well on the track in Friday's preliminary heats. Three Spartans made it through to Saturday's final in the 100 meters. Kai Cole was the second-fastest qualifier in 10.23 seconds, a new PR. Anthony Franklin also qualified with a time of 10.41 seconds, as did Bryan-Madison Ahouman, who was second in his heat in a PR of 10.44 seconds.

Other qualifiers included Kimtai in the 800 (1:55.48), Dazon Harrison in the 400 (48.59) and both Joshua Sutton (14.94) and Camren Wynder-Hill (14.99) in the 110 hurdles.

Day 3 gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday with the women's javelin and pole vault and men's triple jump. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the 4x100 relay. Saturday's action will be streamed live on the MEAC Digital Network YouTube Page.
