Sigei Shatters School Record in First Outdoor Meet of 2023 Season

| By:
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's track and field team opened the 2023 outdoor season over the weekend at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State.

Gidion Sigei shattered a school record in the 10,000 meters, previously held by Anteneh Girma at the 2015 Colonial Relays (30:11.40). Sigei finished the race in 29:34.41 on Friday to earn 41st in a talented field.

Kai Cole was the Spartans' highest finisher for the week, taking seventh place in the 200 meters with a time of 21.31.

Rodric Cox-Cooper II finished ninth in the triple jump, recording a distance of 47 feet, 0.75 inches.

Regan Kimtai also notched a top-10 finish, earning tenth in the 800 meters at 1:50.39. The time marked a personal record, and he'd set another PR in the 1500 meters as well in Raleigh (3:50.70).

Joshua Sutton made his mark on both the track and the field. He took 11th in the high jump by clearing a height of six feet, seven inches, before earning 14th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.63.

Sutton wasn't the only Spartan to shine in those particular events. Antaeveon Payne finished 25th in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 15.02, while Terric Jones nabbed 20th in the high jump by clearing six feet and 3.25 inches.

Brothers Rayquan and Raeshon Smith put together a strong combination of performances in throws over the weekend. Both set personal records in the hammer throw with tosses of 136-0 and 134-3, respectively, while both placed top-40 in the shot put as well. Rayquan Smith also earned 32nd in the discus throw (134-6).
