Cole, Kimtai, Sigei Among Top Spartan Performers at Virginia Challenge

| By:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Norfolk State continued to shine in a variety of events this week, capping off a successful week at the Virginia Challenge.

Kai Cole was in the last section of the 200 meters on Saturday, but by the end of the event, his name stood first and above the rest. Just one week after setting a pair of PRs at the 2023 NSU Invitational, he won the 200 on Saturday with a time of 20.98.

Gidion Sigei took third in the 10,000 meters on Friday with a time of 29:37.52, the second best mark in school history. He finished just three seconds shy of beating the program record he set in Raleigh just one month prior.

Regan Kimtai finished fourth in the 1500 meters, setting a personal record of 3:50.55. He too had set his previous PR at the Raleigh Relays this year, edging out that time by 15 hundredths of a second on Friday night.

Kimtai continued his strong week as the Spartans' final competitor on Saturday, participating in the 800 meters. He finished in 1:52.22 as rain began to fall, earning eighth place.

Isaac Haywood set an outdoor personal record of his own on Friday evening as well, recording a triple jump of 50-2.75. The mark earned him seventh place in the competition, while the mark stood just 3.5 inches shy of his overall triple jump PR set during the indoor season.

Getting the Spartans going on Thursday, Rayquan Smith took 18th in the hammer throw, posting a distance of 139 feet, nine inches. Dwight Henry came up just seven inches from a personal best, recording a 139-foot, 3-inch javelin throw.

Victor Jumo represented the Spartans well in the 5,000 meters, earning an 11th place finish. He completed the event with a season-best time of 14:37.80.

A weather delay forced a late start to Saturday's events, but Joshua Sutton wasted no time getting the Spartans back on track, taking seventh in the 110 meter hurdles in 14.40 seconds. Henry followed closely behind at 14.70.

Sutton excelled in the high jump as well, finishing 11th by clearing the bar at six feet, 2.75 inches.

The Spartans return to action next weekend in Philadelphia for the Penn Relays.
