Spartans Excel Despite Soggy Conditions at Penn Relays

| By:

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Norfolk State men's track and field team braved the rain all weekend at the Penn Relays, notching several high finishes in the damp conditions at Franklin Field.

Gidion Sigei and Victor Jumo got the Spartans started on Thursday evening, competing in the men's college 5,000 meters. Sigei took 24th by completing the event in 14 minutes, 11.64 seconds, a new personal record. Jumo finished in 14:53.76, his third-best time of the season.

The Spartans competed in multiple events on Friday, headlined by Joshua Sutton earning sixth in the men's college high jump, clearing a height of six feet, 5.5 inches. It was the junior's best mark in the event since the Raleigh Relays in March.

Norfolk State excelled in shorter distances as well, finishing fifth in the Men's Sprint Medley Championship of America. The team of Anthony Franklin, Jeremiah Zellander, Dazon Harrison, and Regan Kimtai completed the event in 3:31.22.

Isaac Haywood kept the momentum going for the Spartans on Saturday, taking eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 48 feet, 10.75 inches.

The Spartans return to the track next weekend in Charlottesville, Va. for the UVA Grand Prix, Norfolk State's last opportunity to prepare for the MEAC Outdoor Championships.
