Wheeler Named BOXTOROW HBCU Player of the Year; Johnson Earns HBCU Impact Award

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's basketball continues to compile postseason awards following a tremendous season. 
 
Kierra Wheeler was named BOXTOROW HBCU National Player of the Year by the publication on Monday, while Diamond Johnson earned HBCU Impact Award honors. Wheeler and Johnson were also both named to the BOXTOROW HBCU All-America First Team.

Both Wheeler and Johnson were the two most dominant players in the MEAC this season. Wheeler, the Minneapolis, Minn. native, averaged 17.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, 1.6 steals on 50.0 percent shooting the season. 

Johnson, the Philadelphia, Pa. native, averaged 20.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.8 steals, 2.9 assists shooting 43.3 percent from the floor and 38.3 from three-point range.

Wheeler was named the 2023-24 MEAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year, in addition to earning All-MEAC First Team and All-Defensive team honors. Junior guard Johnson was named Newcomer of the Year as well an All-MEAC First Team and an All-Defensive Team selection.

The team is coming off a third consecutive MEAC regular season title, a second consecutive MEAC tournament title, second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, and a program record for wins in a season (27).
