NORFOLK, Va. – After a much-needed bye week, the Norfolk State football team returns to William "Dick" Price Stadium for Homecoming weekend, opening Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against defending champion South Carolina State on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. 

ABOUT NORFOLK STATE 

Norfolk State (1-6) enters the contest seeking its second win of the 2025 campaign. The Spartans last took the field at Wofford, where they fell 31-14. 

Inside the Numbers 

Quarterback Otto Kuhns continues to lead the NSU offense with 1,355 passing yards on 115-of-190 attempts and eight touchdowns through the air. 

Top targets include Kam'Ryn Thomas (459 yards, one TD) and DreSean Kendrick (451 yards, three TDs), while X'Zavion Evans (320 yards, four TDs) and Kevon King (270 yards, three TDs) pace the ground attack. 

On defense, Major Dillard (49 tackles) and Terique Miles (48 tackles) headline a unit that continues to show grit week after week, combining for 97 total stops, followed closely by Khalib Gilmore with 40. 

Last Time Out 

Against Wofford, the Spartans posted 73 rushing yards, led by Evans with 45 on 16 carries. Kuhns threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-29 passing, adding 12 rushing yards. 

Thomas hauled in a team-high eight receptions for 112 yards and one score. Defensively, Miles anchored the group with 14 tackles (five solo), while Corey Chapman added 10 (eight solo). Makai Frisby made a pair of impact plays, forcing a fumble and grabbing an interception. 


ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 

South Carolina State (4-3) rides a two-game win streak into Norfolk after convincing victories over Savannah State (49-6) and North Carolina A&T (22-16). 

Inside the Numbers 

The Bulldogs have split time at quarterback between Ryan Stubblefield (1,052 yards, 5 TDs) and William Atkins IV (713 yards, 5 TDs). 

Wideout Jalen Johnson leads the receiving corps with 399 yards on 34 catches, while Jordan Smith (291 yards, 2 TDs) and Deyandre Ruffin (267 yards, 1 TD) provide reliable secondary options. 

On the ground, Tyler Smith (221 yards) and Mason Pickett-Hicks (200 yards) headline the rushing attack, complemented by Stubblefield's 143 rushing yards and four touchdowns. 

Defensively, Jordan Franklin and Michael Lunz each have 30 tackles to lead the team. 

Last Time Out 

In last week's win, the Bulldogs' quarterback tandem combined for 165 passing yards and two touchdowns. Pickett-Hicks paced the run game with 67 yards, while Cyrus Ellison tallied 54 receiving yards and a touchdown. 


NATIONAL FCS RANKINGS 

South Carolina State boasts one of the nation's top defenses, ranking: 

  • 4th in third-down conversion defense (27.5%) 

  • 5th in fewest interceptions allowed (2) 

  • 16th in passing efficiency defense (115.62) 

  • 16th in tackles for loss (6.9 per game) 

  • 17th in total defense, allowing just 312.9 yards per game 

Offensively, the Bulldogs rank 15th nationally in third-down conversion percentage (47.3%). 


A LOOK AT THE COACHES 

Michael Vick, in his first season at the helm for Norfolk State, holds a 1-6 record entering the matchup. 
Chennis Berry, in his second season leading South Carolina State, owns a 13-6 record with the Bulldogs and a 40-13 mark overall as a head coach. 


SERIES HISTORY 

South Carolina State leads the all-time series 22-5, including a 53-21 victory last season in Orangeburg, S.C.
