NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State University men's basketball team continues its early-season slate with a quick trip west to Laramie, Wyoming, for a Sunday matchup against the University of Wyoming Cowboys on Nov. 23.
About the Cowboys
Wyoming enters Sunday's contest with a 4-1 record, most recently falling to Sam Houston State on Wednesday, Nov. 19, by a score of 78-70. Prior to the loss, the Cowboys opened the season on a four-game winning streak, defeating Northern State (99-75), Cal State Fullerton (92-82), Austin Peay (79-65), and Portland (93-56).
Leland Walker paced the Cowboys with 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting against Sam Houston State, while Nasir Meyer added 11 points and Abou Magassa chipped in 10.
As a team, Wyoming is shooting 45.2% from the field, 21.7% from beyond the arc, and 40.9% from the free throw line. Four Cowboys are averaging double figures this season: Meyer (11.8), Walker (11.4), Damarion Dennis (10.4), and Uriyah Rojas (10.0). Magassa leads the team on the boards with 30 rebounds (6.0 rpg).
Wyoming is under the direction of second-year head coach Sundance Wicks, who holds a 16-21 record at the helm. The Cowboys currently sit fourth in the Mountain West standings after being picked ninth in the preseason poll.
About the Spartans
Norfolk State (3-3) heads into the weekend following a thrilling 62-60 Battle of the Bay victory over rival Hampton.
Elijah Jamison led the Spartans with 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while
Anthony McComb III added 13 points (5-of-13). NSU finished the night shooting 44.2% from the floor, 38.5% from three, and 50% at the free throw line.
McComb (14.8 ppg), Jamison (13.2 ppg), and
Devon Ellis (11.7 ppg) all average double figures through six games. On the glass, McComb and
Keyontae Lewis share the team lead with 29 total rebounds (4.8 rpg). McComb also leads the Spartans in steals (11), while Jamison leads in assists (21).
About the Series
Sunday marks the third meeting between the programs. Wyoming holds a 2-0 advantage in the series, winning 72-65 in overtime during the 1997-98 season and 84-42 in the 2003-04 matchup.
