UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. --- Coming off a victory at the HBCU Showcase two weeks ago, the Norfolk State men's track & field team competed against some of the country's best programs at the Penn State National opened this weekend, producing several strong performances.
"I am very pleased with the performance of our program this weekend," Director of Track & Field Programs
Kenneth Giles said. "We showed that we can compete with the best programs in the nation this weekend."
Gidion Sigei capped off the first day, claiming the only win on the day in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:28.95. Freshman
Lewis Too made his debut in the same event, clocking a time of 15:02.75 to place 11th.
Norfolk State earned a pair of top-four finishes in the 400 meters with
Vincent Bond Jr. earning third place (47.49), while
Premier Wynn took fourth place (47.90).
The Spartans also saw a pair of personal bests in the weight throw on Friday, led by a 14th-place finish from
Troy McWilliams (52-6 1/2).
Raeshon Smith followed in 22nd place (49-1.5).
Camren Wynder-Hill capped off the first day of field events with a 15th-place finish in the long jump (21-11).
NSU freshman sprinter
Julian Ward kicked off day two of the meet, picking up a win in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 21.53.
Lavontay Bond also picked up a top-five finish in the same event, taking fifth place (21.84) while
Christopher Basking earned sixth place (21.94).
Senior
Victor Jumo picked up a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters with a personal best time of 8:20.44. Too followed up his collegiate debut from the day before with an 11th place finish in the same event (8:32.41).
Graduate sprinter
Kendrick Winfield earned a second-place finish in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 21.26 to round out the individual running events.
The 4x400 relay team made up of Wynn, Winfield, Bond Jr. and
Tafari Bishop produced a strong race, placing third with a time of 3:08.11.
Isaac Haywood led the Spartans in day two of field events, placing second in the triple jump (50-2.5).
Jayden Gordon also took fifth place in the same event (46-4.75). Wynder-Hill rounded out the Spartans' finishers in the triple jump, placing seventh (45-4.5).
Jaymes Saunders capped off the field events on day two, placing in a tie for sixth place in the high jump (6-6).
