Young Takes Weight Throw Title on Day One of MEAC Indoor Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The Norfolk State women's track & field team sits in second place following day one of the MEAC Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
 
Howard leads the event with 49 points. Norfolk State follows with 35 points, while Morgan State sits in third place with 32 points.
 
Senior Leslie Young led the way for the Spartans, earning a first-place finish in the weight throw (57-09). Essence Shaw also earned the silver medal in the pentathlon with 3,106 points.
 
Norfolk State also earned a pair of top five finishes in the 3,000 meters with Mercyline Kimaiyo clocking a time of 10:18.82 to take third while Abigael Chebet placed fourth (10:23.75). Sonia Koech also ran a time of 10:52.02 to take sixth in the same event.
 
The NSU DMR team consisting of Jahmei Wyatt, Leanna Lewis, Kadynce Taylor, and Kimaiyo clocked a second-place finish with a time of 12:13:43.
 
Brooklyn Robinson qualified for a pair of tomorrow's finals first in the 60 meters where she placed eighth (7.61). She also took second in the 60-meter hurdle prelims with a time of 8.28.
 
The Spartans earned a pair of spots in the 800-meter finals with Wyatt leading the way, clocking a first-place finish (2:17.22) while Lewis took fourth (2:21.28).
 
Redshirt senior Allysia Farrar clocked a time of 24.48 to place seventh in the 200 meters to earn her a spot in tomorrow's finals.
 
Robinson closed out the Spartans' field events, posting a 12th place finish in the long jump (16-8.5).
 
Norfolk State closes out the MEAC Indoor Championships tomorrow, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Virginia Beach, Va.
