Spartans Dominate NSU Invitational

NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State men's track & field team accumulated several top finishes at the NSU Invitational on Saturday at William 'Dick' Price Stadium.
 
Basil Koech kicked the day off with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking a time of 9:37.12, while Lewis Too followed in second (9:37.31). The men's 4x400 relay team consisting of Donovan Terry, Kendrick Winfield, Antoinne Smith, and Julian Ward ran a season best time of 40.34 to take first place.
 
Senior Victor Jumo shined on senior day, taking first in the 1,500 meters (3:55.37), while senior sprinter Jahquan Christopher won the 400-meter hurdles with a season best time of 52.50.
 
Premier Wynn led the way in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 20.91. Vincent Bond Jr. took fourth (21.16), while Antoinne Smith (21.51), Lavontay Bond (21.65), and Tafari Bishop (21.75) followed closely behind.

Bishop claimed the 400-meter crown with a personal-best time of 47.30, while Bond took second (47.84). Terry clocked a personal best to finish in third place (47.90).
 
Sean Bell got the Spartans going in field events, taking first place in the Javelin Throw (155-5). Raeshon Smith followed in third, hitting a mark of 124 feet, 1.0 inch.
 
Troy McWilliams put together a strong performance in the hammer throw, winning the event (182-10), while Smith earned second (166-03).
 
Jayden Gordon notched a personal best in the long jump, winning the event by hitting a mark of 48 feet, 2.75 inches. Kristopher Stephens also hit a personal best mark to win the long jump (22-10).
 
Jaymes Saunders claimed a second-place mark of 6 feet, 4.75 inches in high jump, while Gordon hit the same mark to take third place. Stephens also placed fourth in the same event (6-2.75).
 
Artell Williams rounded out the day with a first place performance out of collegiate athletes and third place overall in the men's shot put (49-9.25). He also took eighth place in the discus with a throw of 141 feet, 0.5 inches.
 
Norfolk State heads to Durham, N.C. from Apr. 10-12 to participate in the Duke Invitational.
