NORFOLK, Va. --- Norfolk State women's basketball standouts
Diamond Johnson and
Kierra Wheeler have been named to the Virginia Sports Information Director's (VaSID) All-State First Team announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
This marks the first time Norfolk State has placed two players on the VaSID All-State First Team in the same season. Johnson and Wheeler join current NSU assistant coach Chanette Hicks as the only players in program history to earn first-team honors.
Â
Johnson played a pivotal role in leading the Spartans to back-to-back MEAC Tournament titles. The 2024-25 MEAC Player of the Year averaged 18.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists per game this past season, while earning spots on two prestigious post season award watchlists: The Dawn Staley Award and Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year.
Â
Etching her name throughout the Norfolk State record book, Johnson scored the most points in a single season in the program's Division I history (663) in 2024-25, while also knocking down the most 3-pointers (70).
Â
Wheeler anchored the Spartans' defense, leading the MEAC in blocked shots with 2.2 per game. She also averaged 15.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per contest, earning All-MEAC First Team and MEAC All-Defensive team accolades.
Â
Leaving her mark on the program, Wheeler became Norfolk State's all-time blocks leader with 162 blocks, surpassing Khadedra Croker.
Â
Johnson and Wheeler helped guide the Spartans to a 30-5 record last season, the winningest season of the program's Division I history, while producing a 16-0 record in MEAC play. Norfolk State finished the season ranked No. 5 in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 Poll.
