NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State head coach
Robert Jones has added one of his former players to the 2025-26 Norfolk State coaching staff, welcoming Kyonze Chavis to the distinguished group.
Â
Chavis boasts a plethora of coaching experience at multiple levels, helping Norfolk State win both MEAC Regular Season and Tournament titles last season as a volunteer assistant coach. Transitioning to a full-time role, Chavis will continue to mold the program that he contributed countless hours to as a standout player.
Â
"I'm just grateful to be coaching at the place that gave me a chance to play Division I basketball, and now an opportunity to coach Division I basketball," Chavis said. "Norfolk State is HOME."
Â
Transferring to Norfolk State from Colby Community College, Chavis spent four years with the Norfolk State basketball program during his playing career. Averaging 7.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.1 steals per game as a redshirt senior, he scored a career-high 15 points against Coppin State. The 6-4 guard knocked down three 3-pointers in the Spartans' NCAA Tournament matchup against No. 1 Gonzaga, recording 12 points and a career-high four steals.
Â
Chavis immediately transitioned to coaching after his playing career concluded, starting out at his alma mater – Norfolk Collegiate School. As the program's head junior varsity coach, Chavis led the Mighty Oaks to a 19-2 record.
Â
Throughout his coaching career, Chavis has trained and developed several Division I talents – including two-time MEAC Player of the Year Joe Bryant Jr.
Â
With Chavis' help on the sidelines, Norfolk State produced a 24-11 overall record during the 2024-25 season. The Spartans conjured a tremendous postseason run, overcoming several second-half deficits in route to the MEAC Tournament title.
