NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team heads south this weekend, traveling to Louisiana and Mississippi for a four-match road swing.
The Spartans enter the trip with a 2-1 record and momentum following a dramatic 4-3 victory over East Carolina. Junior
Yuliya Yurkova earned MEAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors after leading the effort.
Norfolk State will face four opponents over the weekend: Xavier University of Louisiana, Southern Miss, Louisiana (Lafayette), and New Orleans.
Friday's contest against Xavier (La.) marks the first meeting between the programs. On Saturday, the Spartans meet Southern Miss for just the second time, with the Golden Eagles holding a 1-0 all-time advantage following a 7-0 result on March 10, 2011.
The matches against Louisiana and New Orleans will also be first-ever matchups for Norfolk State.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Xavier University of Louisiana (Fri.)
A perennial NAIA contender ranked No. 8 nationally, Xavier enters the weekend 4-3 and riding a two-match win streak after 6-1 victories over No. 7 SCAD and the College of Coastal Georgia. This will be the first meeting between the programs.
Southern Miss (Sat.)
The Sun Belt's Golden Eagles hold a 4-2 record and have won two straight, defeating Florida A&M and Alcorn State by 4-0 scores. Southern Miss leads the all-time series 1-0 following a 7-0 decision in 2011.
Louisiana (Sun.)
Louisiana enters at 4-3 with consecutive wins over West Florida (4-3) and Stetson (5-2). Sunday marks the first matchup between the teams.
New Orleans (Mon.)
The Southland Conference Privateers are 5-0 on the season, most recently defeating Jackson State (4-1) and Alcorn State (4-0). This will be the first meeting between the programs.
UP NEXT
Following the southern road swing, the Spartans remain on the road with a trip to Greensboro, N.C., to face Shaw on March 10 and North Carolina A&T State on March 11.
