NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 5-2 victory over No. 11-ranked NAIA program Xavier (La.) on Friday afternoon.
Play began in doubles, where the Spartans struck first.
Boris Lunin and
Dominik Simunovic secured a 6-3 win before Xavier evened the tally to force a deciding match. The No. 2 duo of Marcin Dójczynski and
Szymon Malecki delivered in the tiebreak, earning a 7-6 victory to give Norfolk State the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Norfolk State captured four of the six singles flights in its matchup against Xavier (La.), highlighted by a strong finish across the lineup.
Marcin Andrzejczak bounced back after dropping the opening set to defeat Nereo Suarez 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, while
Szymon Malecki followed with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Gabriel Velez.
Dominik Simunovic controlled his match from the start, earning a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Edilson Rosa, and
Kasper Kulpa added another point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Martin Rivera.
Xavier claimed the remaining two flights, as Christian Sanchez defeated
Szymon Janzen 7-6, 6-3 and Emmanuel Jebutu edged Marcin Dójczynski in a tightly contested three-set battle.
