NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State men's track and field team captured its fifth consecutive MEAC Outdoor Championship on Saturday afternoon at William "Dick" Price Stadium.
The Spartans totaled 183 points to finish ahead of South Carolina State (126) and Delaware State (115). Norfolk State earned 10 medals during the three-day meet, including six gold, three silver, and one bronze.
Following the meet, head coach Kenneth Giles earned Most Outstanding Coach honors, while
Kristopher Stephens received Most Outstanding Field Athlete recognition.
"Our guys have championship DNA in this program," Giles said. "They sacrifice personal accomplishments for the best interests of the team, and everyone played a part in bringing this championship home. I am extremely proud of this group."
Stephens opened the final day with a gold medal in the triple jump, recording a mark of 15.64 meters.
Landon Walker added a silver medal in the pole vault after clearing 4.76 meters.
Sean Bell scored five points in the javelin with a fourth-place throw of 50.13 meters, while
Xavier McGreal added two points with a seventh-place mark of 46.03 meters.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team started the day for the Spartans on the track. The team consisting of
Jaycob Linsey,
Christopher Basking,
Julian Ward, and
Antoinne Smith ran a time of 40.01 to take gold in the event.
The Spartans added nine points in the 1,500 meters.
Ian Kimutai led the group with a fifth-place finish in 3:56.31, followed by
Jemmel Green in sixth at 3:58.06 and
Daniel Mathenge in seventh at 4:01.57.
Kendrick Winfield claimed gold in the 400 meters with a time of 46.09, while
Lavontay Bond placed fifth in 47.41. Basking followed with a gold medal in the 100 meters, crossing the line in 10.18 seconds.
Winfield later secured his second gold medal of the day in the 200 meters with a winning time of 20.55. Basking earned silver in 20.70, while Ward finished fifth in 21.23. Mathenge paced the Spartans in the 5,000 meters, earning silver with a time of 14:55.00. Kimutai followed closely with a bronze-medal finish in 14:56.94.
The 4x400-meter relay team of
Vincent Bond Jr.,
Lavontay Bond, Ward, and
Donovan Terry closed the championship with a first-place finish in 3:07.92.
