VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.
– The Norfolk State men finished second and the women fifth on Saturday morning at the 2007 MEAC Cross Country Championships at Mt. Trashmore Park.

Maryland Eastern Shore swept the men's and women's titles. The UMES men tallied 45 points to just edge NSU's 56. The Hawks' women recorded 47 points, well ahead of second-place Hampton (84). The Spartan women finished with 121.

The two NSU teams combined to have six runners place in the top 15 of their respective races, earning All-MEAC honors.

Despite having their MEAC record streak of consecutive championship end at seven, the Spartan men had four runners finish in the top 11 to earn all-conference accolades. Leading the way was senior Dominic Luka (Marietta, N.Y.), who took first place overall to earn Most Outstanding Performer honors. After finishing as runner-up at last year's championship, Luka came back strong this season by finishing the rain-soaked 5-mile course in 25:09.

Also earning All-MEAC honors were junior Hillary Cheruiyot (Eldoret, Kenya), who came in second place in 25:24, and sophomore Jonathan Soimo (Kapsabet, Kenya), who was sixth in 26:27. Junior Keenan Harris (Norfolk, Va.) placed 11th overall in 27:14 to earn his third straight All-MEAC honor. Liam Arocho (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out NSU's top five in 36th place (29:12).

The NSU women were paced by freshman standout Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.). She finished the 3.1-mile course in 19:16, good enough for sixth place overall. The NSU women's other All-MEAC performer was sophomore Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.), who was 10th in 19:37.

Rounding out the NSU women's top five were Anastacia Limo (Kapsabet, Kenya), who was 21st in 20:32; Candace Shoates (Newport News, Va.), who placed 41st overall in 22:18; and Chynell Gray (Virginia Beach, Va.), who came in 43rd place in 22:25.

UMES' Merrecia James (18:27) was the overall winner on the women's side.
