Box Score
DOVER, Del. — Roy Bright scored a game-high 20 points, and Delaware State rode a hot shooting performance to its ninth straight win over Norfolk State, 69-54, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
Bright scored 12 points in a first half that saw the Hornets (6-9, 3-0 MEAC) shoot 55 percent (16-of-29) from the floor. NSU (6-9, 3-1), in turn, shot just 36 percent (8-of-22) in the opening 20 minutes and saw its season-high four-game win streak end.
Interestingly enough, Bright scored all 12 of his first-half points in the first 9:10 of the period. He went to the bench with two fouls with 10:37 remaining in the first half and DSU leading 16-8. Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) then scored to bring NSU within 16-10, but the Hornets, playing mostly without Bright the rest of the half, outscored NSU 23-9 over the final 10 minutes of the stanza to lead 39-19 at the break.
The Spartans shot much better in the second half (50 percent), and a three-point play by Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) got them within 47-34 with 13:34 left. But NSU could get no closer. NSU had seven of its 17 turnovers in the second half and connected on just 1-of-6 field goals from behind the arc after halftime.
Lyons had 16 points for NSU, 10 in the second half, but was the only Spartan to reach double figures.
Donald Johnson added 12 points for the Hornets, who shot 51 percent (27-of-53) for the game.
NSU tries to get back on the winning track Monday night at Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
