Game Notes
FARMVILLE, Va. — Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) recorded his first career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as the Norfolk State men's basketball team won its season-opener, 81-74, over Longwood at Willett Hall on Sunday night.
Deloach was 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 1:02, and Aleek Pauline (South Jamaica, N.Y.) all but sealed it with a clutch layup with 20 seconds left for NSU, which improved to 2-0 under season-openers under coach Anthony Evans.
Longwood started quickly. The Lancers (1-1) took their largest lead of the game at 21-14 on a field goal by E.J. Dawson with 9:40 left before the half. But the Spartans slowly rallied behind the play of freshman Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) and first-year sophomore James Williams (Miramar, Fla.). O'Quinn was 4-of-4 from the floor for nine points in the half, while Williams canned two of his three 3-pointers for six first-half points.
NSU led by as many as seven, 37-30, after a short shot in the lane by Deloach, but the Lancers drew within 37-33 at the half on a late 3-pointer by Durann Neil.
There were eight ties and eight lead-changes in the second half. Deloach broke the final tie with two free throws to give NSU a 76-74 lead with 1:02 left. After a missed 3-pointer by Ryan Bogan, Pauline made a driving layup after cutting down the left side of the lane for a four-point cushion.
Deloach then sealed it by making 3-of-4 from the line.
The Spartans shot 57 percent from the floor and 88 from the foul line (15-of-17) in the second half.
NSU finished the game shooting 53 percent and 89.5 percent from the line (17-of-19). Deloach finished two assists shy of a triple-double, dishing out eight. Lyons hit a career-high six 3-pointers, hitting 6-of-8. NSU's three newcomers who played Sunday night - O'Quinn, Pauline and Williams – combined for 29 points. O'Quinn stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks, Pauline had eight points and six assists and Williams added nine points.
Bogan had 20 points and Dana Smith had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Longwood.
