FARMVILLE, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team dropped a pair of games at the Longwood Tournament on Saturday, falling 6-5 to Quinnipiac and 8-6 to Iona at Lancer Field.

Against Quinnipiac (1-1), the Spartans wasted no time getting on the board. With two outs in the top of the first, Jewel White (Chesapeake, Va.) singled to left field and Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) followed with a two-run homerun to put NSU (1-5) up 2-0.

Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) followed with a triple to right field and scored on Micki Rodriguez's (Newport News, Va.) infield single to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

But Quinnipiac answered in the bottom of the first with three runs to tie the game and scored once in the second to take the lead.

The Spartans countered in the top of the fourth when Wittwer led off the inning with a double to left field. Three batters later, Jacklyn Peaton (Virginia Beach, Va.) drove in two runs with a single to center field.

NSU had a two-run lead going in to the bottom of the seventh, but Quinnipiac scored two runs in the frame to take the game 6-5.

In the Iona game, the Spartans were shut out for the first three innings, but scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring the score to 7-3. NSU scored three more runs in the last four innings, but could not overcome Iona's (1-1) lead.

White was 3-for-4 with one run, while Ramsey was 1-for-3 with a score and two RBI against Quinnipiac. Peaton went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI against Iona. On the day, Wittwer led the offense, going 4-for-6 with four runs and an RBI.
