FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood University softball team pounded Norfolk State 14-1 and Quinnipiac downed NSU 6-3 on Sunday in the Lancer Spring Classic at Lancer Field.
Longwood (4-3) kept it close for the first five innings of the game as the Lancers only led by three runs, 4-1. But they scored three runs in the top of the sixth and seven in the seventh to take the game 14-4.
Rachel Mills threw three shutout innings allowing two hits and striking out five in the winning effort. Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss. She pitched six innings and gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs, while walking five and striking out three.
In the Quinnipiac game, the Spartans scored early. Rodriguez hit an RBI single to center field in the top of the first inning to put NSU (1-7) up 1-0. But Quinnipiac (2-2) answered in the bottom of the frame with a run to tie the game at 1-1.
The Spartans would only go on to score two more runs on an RBI groundout by Gladys Cabeza (Corning, N.Y.) in the top of the fifth and an RBI triple to center field by Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) in the sixth. But the Bobcat offense had done enough, as Quinnipiac was already 6-3 going into the bottom of the sixth.
Bobcat pitcher Jaimie Iaquinto tossed four and two-third innings and allowed seven hits, two runs, walked four and struck out six to get the win. Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) went five innings and gave up four hits, four runs (two earned) and walked one in the losing effort.
The Spartans head back home to host the 2008 Spartan Clash Tournament which includes Coppin State, Delaware State, and the University of Hartford. The dedication ceremony for the softball facility upgrades will take place prior to the opening game between NSU and Coppin State at 9 a.m.
