NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team posted a total of 28 runs in a ten-inning doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Central University on Tuesday at the NSU Softball Field. NSU (6-11) won the first game 10-1 and shut out the Lady Eagles 18-0 in game 2.
In game 1, the Spartans wasted no time in taking the lead. Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) knocked in three runs with a double to center field in the bottom of the first inning to put NSU up 3-0.
The Spartans scored five runs in the second, highlighted by Jacklyn Peaton (Virginia Beach, Va.) first home run as a Spartan. With one out and a runner on base, Peaton homered to left field to give NSU an 8-0 advantage.
NSU managed two more runs in the third inning.
NCCU did not score until the fifth and final inning. Jen Langston doubled to center field with two outs to score Kristen Schooler, but Michelle Ishida struck out to end the game.
Wittwer improved to 3-5 with the win after pitching five innings and allowing just four hits and one earned run and striking out four. Ishida took the loss and allowed six hits, eight runs (seven earned), and walked three.
In the second game, it was all NSU as the Spartans rapped out a season-high 20 hits and scored a season-best 18 runs. All but two of the 11 Spartans who played in game 2 had at least one hit.
Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) tossed a five-inning, two-hit shutout to improve to 3-4 on the season. Stacey Green fell to 0-7 after yielding six hits and seven runs (six earned).
On the day, Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) went a combined 5-for-8 with four runs and five RBI. Peaton was a combined 4-for-6 with four runs and two RBI, and Gladys Cabeza (Corning, N.Y.) and Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) each went 3-for-4 and scored three runs in game 2.
The Spartans return to action on Friday in a 1 p.m. nonconference doubleheader against Howard University at the NSU Softball Field.
