NORFOLK, Va. – The Howard University softball team, the 2007 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament champions, swept a non-conference doubleheader from Norfolk State 11-6, 7-2 on Friday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
Howard (3-8) posted 11 runs on 13 hits in the first game to down the Spartans 11-6.
NSU (6-13) took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With two runners on base, Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) singled to center field to score Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) who reached on an error by the third baseman.
Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) brought in two runs with a double to right field and scored two batters later to give NSU a 4-2 lead.
The Lady Bison exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth, including a two run home run by Mya Spencer to go up 8-2. Emily Johnson sealed the win for Howard with a solo homer to center field in the top of the seventh.
Rodriguez drove in two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to five, 11-6, to end the game. She took the loss after allowing eight earned runs and nine hits in four innings.
Dale McNeal tossed six innings and gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out four batters to earn the win.
In game 2, Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to give NSU a 2-0 lead, but Kristina Cordova led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to tie the game at 2-2.
Spencer got out of the park for the second time for the day in the top of the sixth, this time with a three run shot over the fence. Johnson had an RBI double to help the Lady Bison post four runs in the frame. Courtney Young scored Howard's last run on a solo homer to center field in the top of the seventh.
Wittwer pitched six and one-third innings, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs in the losing effort. McNeal went the distance in game two for her second win of the day. She threw seven innings and gave six hits and two runs, one earned.
NSU continues its month-long home stand on Thursday when the Spartans play Central Connecticut State at 1 p.m.
