Game 1
Game 2
NORFOLK, Va. – The Central Connecticut State University softball team swept a doubleheader from Norfolk State 8-1, 10-2 on Thursday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
The Spartans fell to 6-15 on the season, while CCSU improved to 4-5.
Things got off to an extremely slow start in the first game as neither team scored in the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, the Blue Devils took a 3-0 lead and held that lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) ended Samantha Keltos' shutout when she singled to right field to score Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) to cut the lead to 3-1. The game took a turn for the worse in the top of the seventh, however, as the Spartans committed four errors that allowed CCSU to score five runs to put the game away.
Keltos earned the win after pitching five and one-third innings and only allowing one unearned run on four hits. Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) fell to 3-6 on the season after throwing six and one-third innings and giving up six hits, six runs (two earned) and striking out seven.
In game 2, the Blue Devils picked up where they left off and posted two runs in the top of the first inning. Before the Spartans could get a run across the plate, four and a half innings had passed and CCSU scored eight runs. But NSU scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to avoid the eight-run mercy rule.
With two outs and a runner on, Gladys Cabeza (Corning, N.Y.) reached first safely on an error by pitcher Rachel Brenneman. Amelia Lewis (Brampton, Ontario) then singled to center field to score Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) and Cabeza to bring the score to 8-2.
Sara Budrick hit a two run home run to left center in the top of the seventh to seal the win for CCSU. Brenneman pitched all seven innings to earn the win. She allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits. Wittwer fell to 3-6 and gave up seven runs, four earned, and nine hits in the losing effort.
NSU travels to cross-town rival Hampton University on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
