GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jeremy Jones went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI, and Nelson Santos doubled twice and knocked in three runs as North Carolina A&T completed a three-game sweep of Norfolk State, 11-5, on Sunday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.
The Aggies (10-11, 3-0) scored 31 runs on 38 hits in sweeping NSU (7-10, 0-3) this weekend. The Spartans were also hurt by three errors on Sunday, and nine in the three games.
A&T led 6-0 after three innings. Nick Rogers had an RBI single and Neil Rosser a sacrifice fly in the second off Spartan starter Quinn Bright (Virginia Beach, Va.). Santos then knocked in three runs with a third-inning double, and Rogers added an RBI double of his own in the frame to make it 6-0 in favor of A&T.
NSU got a run back in the fourth on an RBI double by Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.), but Jones hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-1 Aggies' advantage.
The Spartans cut their deficit in half with a three-run fifth. NSU picked up just one hit in the frame, a two-out single by Billy Canady (Philadelphia, Pa.)and took advantage of a pair of two-out errors to get within 7-4.
But the Aggies put the game away by scoring two runs in both the sixth and eighth innings. Joe McIntyre hit an RBI double and Jones a run-scoring single in the sixth. The Aggies' two runs in the eighth scored via an NSU error and a wild pitch by Spartan reliever Horace Smith III (Emporia, Va.).
Rogers, McIntyre and Nick Mayo all added two hits apiece for the Aggies.
Daniel Howerton (2-2) earned the win for A&T. He allowed six hits and four runs, one earned, in six innings. He walked five and struck out three.
Bright (1-3) was the losing pitcher for NSU. He allowed 12 hits and nine runs, eight earned, in seven innings. He walked just one and fanned six.
Jerrod Farley (Chester, Va.) had two hits and a stolen base for NSU. Brad Stephenson (Chesapeake, Va.) and Joyce knocked in runs for the Spartans.
NSU returns home for a 6 p.m. game Wednesday against Old Dominion.
