HAMPTON, Va. — The Hampton University softball team swept a doubleheader 6-5, 4-1 from Norfolk State on Tuesday afternoon at Lady Pirates Field.

In game 1, the score was tied 2-2 until the bottom of the third inning. Hampton (15-9) scored four runs in the third, thanks in part to two Spartan errors, to go up 6-2.

NSU (6-17) rallied in the top of the seventh to get within a run, 6-5, but could get no closer.

Jada Jeffries was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Brittany Davis went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Lady Pirates. Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) each went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Amanda Black tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing eight hits, five runs (three earned) and striking out six. Rodriguez pitched six innings in the losing effort. She gave up eight hits, six runs, two earned, and struck out four.

In the second game, the Lady Pirates scored all four of their runs in the first three innings. Black had a three-hit shutout going until Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) hit an infield sacrifice to score Gladys Cabeza (Corning N.Y.) in the top of the fifth to give NSU its only run of the game.

Black went the distance again, pitching all seven innings and giving up six hits and one earned run. Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) took the loss after allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and walking two.

The Spartans open MEAC Southern Division play this weekend when they host Bethune-Cookman in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and the single-game on Sunday starts at noon.
