NORFOLK, Va. – Christina Trimble hit two homeruns, including a grand slam in game 2 and Allison Garcia went a combined 8-for-9 as Bethune-Cookman swept Norfolk State 11-1, 13-6 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
Trimble finished the day with three hits in eight at-bats, batted in six runs and scored three. Garcia knocked in five runs, crossed the plate four times and earned both wins in the pitching circle for B-CU (8-27, 2-0 MEAC).
In game 1, the Lady Wildcats jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead after posting 3 runs in the first inning and six in the second.
NSU (6-19, 0-2 MEAC) scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the second. With one out, Jewel White (Chesapeake, Va.) hit a double and advanced to third on the throw. She later scored on a throwing error by third baseman Anush Mooradian.
Brandi Holley hit a two-run shot in the top of the fifth to put B-CU up 11-1. The Spartans could not produce any more runs in the bottom of the fifth, causing the game to end per the eight-run rule.
Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) took the loss for NSU after pitching two innings and giving up eight hits and nine earned runs. Garcia pitched a one-hitter, allowing just one run and striking out five.
NSU kept it close at the beginning of the second game and took a 5-2 lead after the second inning. But the Lady Wildcats posted four runs in the top of the fourth to go up 6-5.
The Spartans tied the game at 6-6 in the third when Jacklyn Peaton (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Rodriguez.
The Lady Wildcats broke the tie with a six-run fifth inning, with four of the runs coming by way of Trimble's grand slam. B-CU scored once more in the top of the seventh to bring the score to 13-6.
Garcia was a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and tossed a six-run, six-hit complete game. She gave up two earned runs, walked one and struck out one. Rodriguez pitched three innings in relief, allowing five hits and seven runs (six earned) in the losing effort.
Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) went 1-4 with three RBI and a run and starting pitcher Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) went 2-for-3 and scored once.
The Spartans wrap up the three-game series at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
