FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University softball team used a pair of one-hit shutouts to take a doubleheader from Norfolk State on Saturday at Lancer Field. The Lancers (25-16) won the first game 1-0 and posted a 6-0 victory in the second game.
Caitlin Hooe scored the only run of game 1 on an RBI single by Ryan Washington.
Rachel Mills threw a one-hit complete game and struck out seven to earn the win. Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) gave up five hits and one run in six innings for the loss.
It was all Longwood in game 2, as the Lancers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first three innings. They posted four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a solo home run by Hooe. In the sixth inning, Hooe hit an RBI double to give Longwood a 6-0 lead. She finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run.
Briana Wells won the game after she pitched six shutout innings, only allowing one hit and striking out four. Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) tossed six innings and gave up nine hits, six runs (two earned), and walked two.
Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) and Ashley Archer (Amelia, Va.) had the Spartans' only hits of the day.
The Spartans return to the NSU Softball Field on Wednesday when they host Liberty at 1 p.m. The doubleheader is designated as faculty appreciation day. All NSU faculty will be recognized and receive giveaways.
