NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team improved to 5-4 on the season with a 5-2 win over Virginia State on Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans swept the doubles matches with Fiorella Valdivia (Lima, Peru) and Stepanka Velebova (Tachov, Czech Republic) leading the way with an 8-1 win at No. doubles. Lerissa Morris (Kingstown, SVG) and Jennifer Astbury (Chesapeake, Va.) won 8-4 at No. 2, while Brittany Foster (Norfolk, Va.) and Ashlee Daugherty (Las Vegas, Nev.) pulled off an 8-3 victory.
Valdivia, the team's lone senior who was recognized during the Senior Day ceremony, easily beat Imani James 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Morris, Astbury, and Daugherty recorded wins at Nos. 2, 4, and 5 singles, respectively.
Velebova had to forfeit the No. 6 singles match because of an injury. Asya Monds beat Foster 1-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0.
The Spartans end their regular season with a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match at North Carolina A&T on Friday at 10 a.m.
