GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T softball team swept a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader from Norfolk State 12-4, 8-0, both in five innings, on Saturday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
In game 1, NSU (16-28, 4-7 MEAC) got on the board first by scoring four runs in the top of the third inning. But the lead would be short-lived as NCAT (28-15-1, 8-3 MEAC) posted six runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-4 lead. Three of those runs came on Jessie Larson's home run to right center field that also scored Tangala Conover and Yahamma White.
The Spartans could not generate any more offense over the last two innings, while the Lady Aggies got six more runs to put the eight-runs-after-five-innings mercy rule into effect.
Jennifer Luper improved to 18-4 on the season with the win. She allowed six hits, four runs (one earned) and struck out four in five innings. Spartan starterKy Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) and reliever Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) almost had identical stat lines, with both giving up nine hits, six earned runs, and walking one. Brown fell to 5-6 on the season with the loss.
All but one of the Lady Aggies who batted in game 1 had two or more hits.
It was all NCAT in game 2. Sasha Philpot pitched a five-inning, three-hit shutout and struck out two to earn the win. Her teammates made easy work of the Spartans and despite committing two errors, the Lady Aggies' defense did not let NSU get into a rhythm.
NCAT got four runs in the second inning on a grand slam by Sylvia Felder and scored two more in the third and fifth innings to take the game 8-0.
Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) yielded five hits, eight runs, five earned, and walked a season-high six batters to fall to 6-13 on the season.
The teams return to the Aggie Softball Complex to play the last game of the series on Sunday at noon.
