Box Score
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a game-high 23 points and Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.) tallied his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-best 17 rebounds as Norfolk State rolled to a 69-51 win over Winston-Salem State on Monday night at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Annex.
Despite an off shooting night from MEAC leading scorer Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.), the Spartans (6-11) never trailed. They pushed their win streak to four games by limiting the Rams (4-14) to 51 points and 35.7 percent accuracy from the field, both lows by an NSU opponent this year.
Lyons rebounded from a seven-point, 3-of-8 shooting effort at South Carolina State on Saturday by making 9-of-15 from the field, 2-of-4 from 3-point range on Monday. Deloach added 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting to go with five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Monroe was 4-of-5 from the floor, but his presence was felt most on the defensive end. The reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week blocked two shots and grabbed 17 rebounds, 13 on the defensive end and six more than his previous career high. The 17 boards are the second-most in the MEAC this season behind Delaware State's Arturo Dubois, who had 21 against Longwood. NSU outrebounded WSSU 49-24.
NSU scored the game's first eight points, and the Rams did not hit a field goal until Diontae Gibson's layup almost five minutes into the game. NSU held WSSU to 26 percent shooting in the first half and just 20 points, the fewest in a half by an NSU opponent this year.
The Rams got as close as three, 48-45, after a layup by Paul Davis with 7:39 left. But they scored just six points the rest of the way. Kevin Worsley (Chesapeake, Va.), Lyons and Deloach scored buckets on consecutive possessions to push the lead back to nine, and the Spartans cruised from there.
Forward Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 10 points and nine rebounds, and guard Aleek Pauline(Jamaica, N.Y.) contributed game highs of five assists and four steals for the Spartans.
Jamal Durham led WSSU with 16 points, but shot just 6-of-17 from the floor. Brian Fisher added 12 points.
The Spartans return to action this Saturday at Hampton. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
