HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Norfolk State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to James Madison on Tuesday evening at Sinclair Gymnasium. JMU (7-14) defeated NSU (4-17) 25-17, 25-13, 21-25, 25-7.
In the first set, the teams were tied 6-6 before the Dukes started to pull away. JMU led by three when a quick 3-0 run allowed a 15-9 advantage. The Dukes cruised from there to finish the set 25-17.
JMU pulled ahead early in the second set as runs of three and four points built an early 10-2 lead. The lead never dropped below six as the Dukes went on for the 25-13 win.
In the third set, NSU took a commanding 17-9 lead to start the set. JMU closed to within three at 24-21 before a service error clinched the set for the Spartans.
In set 4, the Dukes jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead. NSU could only generate seven points in the set, falling 25-7, and helping JMU to snap a seven-match losing streak.
Lindsay Callahan led JMU with 11 kills and five digs. Danielle Erb had nine kills and eight digs, while Kelly Turner added nine kills on .222 hitting with six blocks. Megan Wiechmann tallied 32 assists, six digs and four blocks.
Nicole Kessner (Blacksburg, Va.) had a solid all-around performance for NSU, narrowly missing a triple-double with nine kills on .529 hitting with 23 assists and 11 digs. Elayne Greer (Bakersfield, Calif.) added eight kills for the Spartans.
The Spartans return home to host South Carolina State at 6 p.m. on Friday in Gill Gym.
