GREENVILLE, N.C. – Host East Carolina hit six home runs, two by Jared Avchen, en route to a 26-6 win over Norfolk State on Wednesday night at Clark-LeClair Park.
The 26 runs scored are the most ever by an NSU opponent, breaking the previous record of 25 set by Virginia in a 25-2 win on March 29, 1979.
The Pirates (13-4) picked up single runs in the first and second innings off NSU starter Jason Donovan (Virginia Beach, Va.) to take the lead early. But things began looking up for the Spartans (3-6) in the third. John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) belted a three-run home run, his first of the year, and Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) scored on an error to give NSU a 4-2 lead.
But ECU scored eight times in the bottom of the third to open up a 10-4 lead. Avchen and Cameron Freeman each hit a two-run homer in the eight-hit inning.
The Pirates gradually stretched out their lead, scoring in every inning except the fifth. ECU scored 10 times in the seventh, aided by two-run home runs by Broc Sutton and Zach Wright.
Stephen Batts was 4-for-5 with a homer for ECU. Trent Whitehead, Ryan Wood and Kyle Roller each had three hits, and Sutton drove in four.
Lynch was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Spartans. Cameron Parsons (Chesapeake, Va.) tallied his first career multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Patrick Hall (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Zaine Jack (Virginia Beach, Va.) each added an RBI single. Jack's hit was the first of his career.
