Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. – Visiting North Carolina A&T scored the winning run on a two-out error in the top of the ninth inning Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field to win the rubber game of a MEAC series with Norfolk State, 7-6.

With the scored tied at 6-all in the top of the ninth, A&T outfielder C.J. Beatty reached on a two-out double of NSU reliever Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.). Beatty scored on a throwing error to give the Aggies (5-13, 2-1 MEAC) the lead in a back-and-forth game. Nick Rogers, the Aggies' third pitcher of the day, struck out the Spartans (4-8, 1-2) in order in the bottom of the ninth to end it.

Both teams started fast. Beatty tripled and scored on a two-out single by Rogers in the top of the first. Lester Rivenbark then doubled Rogers to third, and both players crossed the plate on a Chris Mullins double.

NSU responded by scoring five times in the bottom of the first. Jermaine Berry (Suffolk, Va.) and Jerrod Farley (Chester, Va.) hit back-to-back RBI singles with two outs. After a walk to Cameron Parsons (Chesepeake, Va.), Andrew Suttmiller (Chesapeake, Va.) drove a 3-2 pitch off Aggie starter Nick Boles deep into center field for a three-run double, giving the Spartans a 5-3 lead.

The Aggies tied it at 5-all in the top of the second on a two-run double by Xavier Macklin off NSU starter Jason Donovan (Virginia Beach, Va.).

Both teams settled down thanks to their bullpens. N.C. A&T's Jonathan Smith pitched 6.2 effective innings, allowing just a single run in the third on an RBI fielder's choice hit by Suttmiller.

Davis was brilliant in his longest outing of the year. He relieved Donovan in the third and pitched the last seven innings, allowing just two unearned runs. The first scored on an NSU error in the fifth, tying the game at 6. Davis (0-1) took the loss despite striking out a career-high eight hitters and allowing just four hits.

Rogers (2-2) got the win, fanning all four hitters he faced.

Beatty was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Macklin (1-for-4) and Chris Mullins (2-for-4) each drove in two runs for the Aggies.

Suttmiller drove in a career-high four runs. Berry was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

NSU hits the road for its next eight games, beginning with a 5 p.m. contest Wednesday at William & Mary.
