NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis teams earned several wins at the Hampton Roads Invitational this weekend at Huntington Tennis Park as its 2011-12 season got underway. All four players who competed won two of their three singles matches and were victorious in three of the six doubles bouts.
Senior Naeemah Brooks earned a pair of wins in Flight 7 beginning Saturday, starting off with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Liz Black of Loyola (Md.), before getting handed a 6-0, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Kate Pettee of Villanova. In the third-place match, Brooks defeated another Loyola opponent, Olivia Ott, 6-2, 6-3.
After losing her first-round match in Flight 9, sophomore Maryna Kariuk came back to win the next two. Navy's Kristy Yau won, 6-4, 6-0, over Kariuk in the first round, and then Kariuk came back for a 6-1, 6-2 win against Eva Ng of Mary Washington. Meghan Puryear, also of MWU, fell victim to Kariuk in the last round, 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Rebecca Graff also earned a pair of wins in Flight 10, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win over Virginia State's Alexandria McRay in the first round. After a 6-3, 6-4 setback to Caitlin Olsen of Navy, Graff posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marida Martins of MWU on Sunday.
Much like Kariuk, freshman Kia Batiste also dropped her opening-round match before winning the next two. Julie Zook of Navy pulled out a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Batiste, who then downed a pair of Virginia State players. Sharmane Tonkins was the first to get upended by Batiste, 6-2, 6-3, and Nakesha Harry followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Batiste on Sunday.
In doubles play on Friday, Brooks and Graff lost their first match in Flight 3, 8-2, to Margaret Iliev and Carly Riney of Army before storming back to take care of Black and Rachel Bergeron of Loyola (Md.), 8-3, and Allison Soldberg and Pettee of Villanova, 8-4, in the third round.
In Flight 4, Batiste and Kariuk did the opposite, winning their first-round match over Nat Houle and Olsen of Navy, 8-4, before dropping matches in the next two rounds. Villanova's Annie Cognetti and Amanda Nelson won, 8-4, while the Kristy Yau-Michelle Yau duo of Navy downed the NSU pair in the third round, 8-6.
