CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team completed the fall portion of its schedule this weekend at the ITA Regional at Virginia's Snyder Tennis Center, as the Spartans were unable to duplicate the success they had a week earlier.
Senior Christian Romanzini was the lone player to pick up a win this weekend for the Spartans, as he took care of Longwood's Steed Johnson, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of singles qualifying play. In the second round, Romanzini fell to Virginia's Ian Uriguen, 6-2, 6-1.
Also in the first round of qualifying, freshman Shaheed Mourillon-Swift was upended by Reese Millner of Virginia, 6-1, 6-1, while Shane Korber of Georgetown easily handled NSU sophomore Kent Austin, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Ben Marks competed in the main draw of singles play, and he also came up short but not without putting up a fight in a 6-3, 7-6(4) loss to George Washington's Ulrik Thomsen.
Marks and Romanzini also competed in the main draw of doubles play against UMBC's Joe Adewumi and Kamal Patel, and again the duo stayed strong but came up on the short end of an 8-6 loss to Adewumi and Patel. Austin and Mourillon-Swift also competed in the main doubles draw, where they suffered an 8-2 loss to Old Dominion's Fahoum Fahoum and Carlos Lopez Villa.
NSU will now look toward the start of its spring season in late January.
