Aspiras Tabbed MEAC Bowler of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – For the second time this season, freshman Thea Aspiras of the Norfolk State bowling team was selected the MEAC Bowler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Aspiras led the No. 16 Spartans at the Kutztown Invitational last weekend, earning Tournament MVP honors and getting selected to the All-Tournament Team after finishing with the top overall average. The Chesapeake native knocked down 1,332 pins in six games for a 222.0 average.

She beat out two other bowlers by exactly 20 pins for the top overall pinfall at the tournament. Included in Aspiras' performance were games of 277, 255 and 244, with the 277 the highest of her young collegiate career so far. Her 255 gave NSU a boost in defeating No. 1 UMES on Saturday.

In her last two tournaments, Aspiras has averaged 217.8 in a combined 12 games. On track for its best season ever, NSU ran its record to 48-28 after this weekend's 6-9 showing at the Kutztown Invite.

Aspiras was also named MEAC Bowler of the Week Jan. 12 after helping NSU capture the MEAC Southern Division regular-season crown.

The Spartans will be back on the road this weekend at the South Carolina Invitational Feb. 5-6.
