SERIES NOTES
NSU leads the all-time series with Delaware State, 27-20. The Hornets have won the last two meetings, however, including a 54-52 victory in Norfolk on Feb. 8, 2010. DSU also won the last meeting at Memorial Hall, 86-74, on Feb. 14, 2009.
UMES TIP-INS
Some additional notes from NSU's loss at UMES on Saturday:
• Kyle O'Quinn registered his 10th double-double of the season and fourth in his last five games with
19 points and 12 rebounds. It was the 20th double-double of O'Quinn's career.
• Limited to nine first-half minutes due to two fouls, O'Quinn did not have a point or rebound in the first half.
• Marcos Tamares tied his career high with 15 points, all of them coming in the first half. That matched
his 15-point night vs. Iona on Nov. 30.
• Brandon Goode also registered a career high in scoring, notching seven points.
• Chris McEachin, the team's third-leading scorer at 10.4 points per game, did not play due to a concussion he suffered at Coppin State last Monday. He will not play against DSU, either.
• The Spartans allowed UMES to shoot 54.5 percent from the floor, the second-best night for an NSU
opponent this season. Fairfi eld shot 63.2 percent on Nov. 26.
STREAKY SPARTANS
The Spartans failed in their attempt to set a school Division I era record by winning six straight games. This year's team won fi ve straight, the fi fth time that has been accomplished since the Spartans moved to Division I in 1997-98. The Spartans also lost 11 in a row earlier in the year, tying last year's team for the longest losing streak in school history.
Defense has played a key role in both streaks. In NSU's earlier 11-game loss, the Spartans allowed an average of 80.8 points per game while allowing their opponents to shoot 49 percent from the floor. In NSU's fi ve-game win streak, the Spartans yielded 73.4 points (inflated by a 108-point night by Coppin State in NSU's double-OT win) and 40 percent shooting.
Saturday vs. UMES, the Spartans reverted to earlier form, as UMES shot 54.5 percent (30-of-55), the second-best night by an NSU opponent this season. The 88 points UMES tallied were the most
by one of NSU's MEAC opponents in regulation this season.
O'QUINN'S BLOCK PARTY
Kyle O'Quinn, the MEAC's No. 2 shot blocker at 3.0 per game, blocked two more Saturday at UMES, giving him 64 on the year. That breaks Steve Gilbert's previous all-time school record of 63 set in the 1992-93 season.
NSU ON THE “U”
The Spartans are 3-0 on ESPNU this season, with wins over Howard, South Carolina State and Morgan State. NSU is 9-4 all-time on ESPNU (since 2005-06), but just 3-3 on the road.
