BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team saw its regular season come to an end in a 7-0 loss to UMBC Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Tennis Courts.
The Retrievers won all three doubles matches, including a tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot, and won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to improve their record to 11-5 overall this season. NSU fell to 5-13 on the year.
Juniors Arsenio Culver and Ben Marks were upended by Cristian Hodel and Joe Adewumi at the No. 1 doubles slot, as the UMBC pair won the tiebreaker, 7-5, for the 8-7 match victory. Culver nearly defeated Hodel at No. 1 singles, winning the first set, 6-3. Hodel came back, though, to win the next two sets, 6-0, 6-4.
In the other two doubles matches, Rasid Winklaar and Mwali Phiri defeated juniors Jonathan Sessom and Christian Romanzini at the No. 2 slot, 8-2, while Adam Duprat and Gaulthier Berret pulled a complete sweep against freshman Kent Austin and Brian Bullock at the third position, 8-0.
Marks, Sessom and Romazini held down the No. 2-4 spots in singles, and all three lost by the exact same score, 6-2, 6-2. Marks fell to Winklaar at the No. 2 slot, while Sessom ran out of luck against Duprat at the third position. Adewumi handled Romanzini at the No. 4 position by that 6-2, 6-2 score.
At No. 5 singles, Berret handled Austin by a 6-0, 6-1 score, while Phiri downed Bullock by that exact 6-0, 6-1 score at the sixth singles position.
The Spartans will close out their season beginning Friday in the MEAC tournament in Raleigh, N.C. NSU will face Howard in the first round at 8:30 a.m. at the Millbrook Tennis Center.
