Morehead State Shoots Lights Out in 75-69 Win over NSU

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Morehead State connected on better than 54 percent in the game and held off a late charge by the Norfolk State men's basketball team in a 75-69 win over the Spartans Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Eagles (11-11) hit 25-of-46 for the game for a 54.3 percent clip, including a blistering 11-of-18 from 3-point range (61.1 percent). After a hot start, NSU (15-6) slowed down in the second half and saw its eight-game win streak, the longest in 17 years, come to a close.

Morehead State took a 39-31 lead into the half and held a nine-point advantage with less than 10 minutes to go before NSU made a charge. The Spartans used a 13-5 run over a six-and-a-half minute span to cut the deficit to its closest of the second half, 67-66, with just 3:00 left. The Spartans, though, missed their next six shots, and a trey from senior Chris McEachin with 12 seconds to go proved too little too late.

McEachin hit 7-of-15 for the game, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range, for a game-high 19 points. Senior Kyle O'Quinn added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds, but as a team NSU had just 24 boards to 33 rebounds for Morehead State.

NSU, though, was done in by an 11-of-23 effort from the free throw line, including just 3-of-12 in the first half alone. Sophomore Pendarvis Williams chipped in with 13 points and game highs of seven assists and four steals. As a team, NSU had 19 assists on its 24 baskets. Williams added three 3-pointers as the Spartans shot 10-of-25 from long range on the night.

The Spartans started off on a hot note, hitting six of their first seven shots to take a 15-8 just five-and-a-half minutes into play. Over the next seven minutes, though, NSU connected on just two shots from the floor before Williams ended the drought with a trey at the 7:12 mark to give NSU a 24-21 lead.

Morehead State took the lead back on a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer from Ty Proffitt, but McEachin converted a fastbreak layup, and junior Rob Johnson sank a trey for a 30-29 NSU lead at the 3:45 mark. A 10-1 run by the Eagles, capped by a 3-pointer from Marsell Holden with five ticks left on the clock, gave Morehead State a 39-31 lead at the break.

NSU had 11 assists on all 11 baskets before intermission but finished with just 10 rebounds at the break. Morehead State hit 8-of-10 from 3-point range in the first half.

A 3-pointer from McEachin and jumper in the lane by senior Marcos Tamares helped the Spartans cut the deficit to four, 44-40, at the 16:46 mark of the second half. Morehead State had taken the only double-digit lead by either team, 41-31, following the halftime break.

McEachin sank another trey at 15:50 for a three-point deficit, 46-43, before the Eagles went back up by nine, 52-43. An 8-3 run capped by a pair of free throws from O'Quinn got NSU back to within four, 55-51, but Morehead State again had an answer. The Eagles used a 7-2 run to get their advantage back to nine, 62-53, with just 9:37 left in the game.

From there, NSU went on its 13-5 run, with Johnson and O'Quinn combining for nine points during that spurt. A cold shooting streak by NSU coupled with MSU's 6-of-6 effort from the charity stripe in the last 1:05 of the game finished off any hopes of a Spartan comeback.

Johnson added 12 points in the game, while sophomore Jamel Fuentes had five assists. NSU won the turnover battle by a 19-12 margin and held a 21-8 advantage in points off turnovers in the game.

Proffitt tallied 18 points for Morehead State, with Drew Kelly (15) and Marsell Holden (12) also joining him in double figures. Angelo Warner added nine points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Morehead State hit 14-of-18 from the free throw line for the game, including 11-of-12 in the second half.

NSU will face Morgan State at home Saturday at 6 p.m. followed by Coppin State at 8 p.m. on Monday.
