SERIES NOTES
NSU leads the series with Delaware State 27-22. The Hornets have won the last four games in the series, dating to a 72-61 Spartan victory in Norfolk on Jan. 17, 2009. DSU has also won the last two games at Echols Hall since that 2009 Spartans' win. NSU is just 1-4 against DSU since the 2008-09 season and only one current NSU player - O'Quinn - has beaten DSU in his career.
RECAPPING HAMPTON
Additional notes from NSU's win over Hampton on Saturday:
•
Chris McEachin scored a career-high 27 points, his second straight game with at least 20.
• McEachin hit five 3-pointers in a game for the sixth time this season.
• Kyle O'Quinn grabbed 18 rebounds, one shy of his career high and the third time this year he has had at least that many in a game.
• NSU outrebounded Hampton 48-35 (+13), one game after being outrebounded by 19 at UMES.
• The game was a sellout (6,191), marking the second straight year the Battle of the Bay has been played before a capacity crowd at Echols Hall.
McEACHIN, O'QUINN EARN WEEKLY MEAC HONORS
Senior
Chris McEachin earned his first-ever MEAC Player of the Week honor for Feb. 13 after averaging 23.5 points in wins over UMES and Hampton. McEachin tied his previous career high with 20 points at UMES, then topped it with 27 points against Hampton. He shot 61.5 percent from long distance and 100 percent from the foul line for the week.
O'Quinn earned his third Defensive Player of the Week award of the year by averaging 12.5 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 1.0 steal. He had five blocks at UMES, then tallied 18 rebounds and four rejections against Hampton.
1,000/1,000 CLUB
Kyle O'Quinn is just three rebounds away from joining an exclusive club at NSU: the 1,000-point/1,000-rebound club. Just six players in NSU history have scored 1,000 career points and grabbed at least 1,000 career rebounds, and none since Derrick Bryant (1992-95). O'Quinn would be the first in NSU's Division I era. More on O'Quinn's all-time rankings on page 3.
McCAULEY MAKES HIS MARK
Though he is the eighth-leading scorer on the team and scores the least of all the normal starters, senior
Rodney McCauley has made an undeniable mark on this year's team with his defense. McCauley typically guards the opposing team's leading guard or wing scorer. He had one of his finer games Saturday, when he helped harass MEAC leading scorer Darrion Pellum of Hampton into 4-of-17 shooting and 10 points, eight below his average. Pellum's 10 points are his second-worst output in a MEAC game this year.
IMPROVEMENT AT THE LINE
NSU has struggled at times this season at the free throw line. The Spartans have been under 65 percent as a team from the line most of the year, but are picking up the pace lately. NSU has shot 80 percent (40-of-50) in the last two games, including a stretch of 25 straight
made foul shots spanning the end of the UMES game and first half of the Hampton game.
Pendarvis Williams (82.1) and
Chris McEachin (79.2) both rank in the MEAC's top five in FT accuracy.
