Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.
– Playing its second match in as many days on the road, the Norfolk State men's tennis team earned a 9-0 victory over Winston-Salem State Saturday morning at WSSU's University Courts.

The Spartans won all six singles matches, including a pair by third-set tiebreaker, to improve their overall record to 2-6 on the season. The Rams fell to 0-3 with the loss.

NSU won a pair of doubles matches by convincing fashion, with seniors Arsenio Culver and Ben Marks pulling off a perfect sweep of Drew Dunzweiler and Calvin Brooks, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. At the third doubles slot, NSU's two other seniors, Christian Romanzini and Roosevelt Cooper, posted an 8-1 victory over Chris Jeter and Creighton Jones.

In the other doubles match, freshmen Igor Braga and Shaheed Mourillon-Swift earned the win over Leandro Imaz and Nick John, 8-5, at the second position.

Culver and Marks also posted dominated victories at the top of the lineup in singles play. Culver defeated Dunzweiler, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 position, while Marks earned a 6-0, 6-1, win over Jeter at the second slot. Mourillon-Swift did even better at the sixth spot, grabbing a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Brooks.

Two other freshmen had to work extra to win their singles matches, with Braga facing Imaz at No. 3 singles and Daniel Grauel battling Jones at the fifth position. Braga won the first set, 6-1, before dropping the second set by the same score against Imaz. Braga, though, kept NSU perfect in the final match score with a 10-5 third-set tiebreaker victory.

Grauel did the opposite, dropping the first set, 6-1, before rebounding with a 6-4 victory in the second. Grauel had little trouble in the third-set tiebreaker, 10-1. Romanzini also won his match at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-3, against John to help NSU complete the sweep of the Rams.

The Spartans will head over to Virginia Wesleyan next Friday at 2:30 p.m. before hosting their first match of the season next Saturday against Longwood at noon.
