WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Following a victory the night before that did not end until after midnight, the Norfolk State women's tennis team fell to Winston-Salem State some 12 hours later on Saturday morning, 6-3, at WSSU's University Courts.
The Rams swept all three doubles matches, the third by default, and won three of the six singles matches to improve to 1-1 on the year. NSU saw its overall record drop to 1-4.
Senior
Naeemah Brooks was one of three players for the Spartans to pick up wins on the day, as she pulled off a comeback victory over Kayla Carter at No. 2 singles. Carter won the first set, 7-6, before Brooks took the second, 6-2. Brooks then won a third-set tiebreaker by a 10-7 margin for the win.
Sophomore
Maryna Kariuk and freshman
Kia Batiste also earned victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Kariuk downed Kalin Jarvis, 6-2, 6-0, while Batiste earned a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Dominique Lindsay at the fifth spot.
Junior
Rebecca Graff nearly pulled out the win over Bianka Locklear at the third singles position, but after Graff won the first set, 6-4, Locklear took the second by a 6-2 score before winning the third-set tiebreaker over Graff, 14-12.
Freshman
Laura Gutierrez also dropped her singles match at the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-3, to Sloane Holmes. Gutierrez and Kariuk fell at No. 2 doubles as well to Locklear and Jarvis, 8-3. At the top doubles spot, Brooks and Graff were unable to overcome Holmes and Carter in the tiebreaker, dropping the match by a 9-8 score after losing that tiebreaker, 7-5.
The Rams also earned default victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
The Spartans will head over to Virginia Wesleyan next Friday at 2:30 p.m. before hosting their first match of the season next Saturday against Longwood at noon.
