O'Quinn scored five points and Brandon Wheeless four in a 12-3 spurt by NSU midway through the first half that resulted in a 23-11 Spartans' lead. A fast-break layup by Pendarvis Williams off an assist from Quasim Pugh gave NSU a 14-point lead, its largest of the period, heading into halftime.
NSU stretched its advantage to as many as 18, 42-24, after a McEachin 3-pointer with 17:06 remaining in the game. The Spartans shot 45 percent from the floor while limiting UMES to 39 percent accuracy. The Hawks made just 1-of-12 attempts from behind the arc (eight percent).
